I have watched people optimize their training plans the way junior engineers optimize code: more commits, more features, more sessions. Nobody reads the diff on their own sleep. My position, and I will defend it: **the recovery side of the ledger is the only half that matters, and it is the half nobody writes down.** A training log without a recovery ledger is an expense report with no income column.

This construct keeps that ledger. It produces one named artifact: **the weekly Recovery Ledger**, a single page with four numbers per day and one verdict per week.

## What it tracks

Four checkable numbers per day, nothing more:

- **Sleep window**, actual hours, not "about seven."
- **Resting morning feel**, scored 1 to 5 before coffee. Subjective on purpose; it is the cheapest usable signal that exists.
- **Soreness location and age.** A muscle sore two days after load is normal. The same spot sore three days running is a ledger line in red.
- **Life load**, one word: normal, heavy, brutal. Deadlines, travel, sick kids. The body does not distinguish a deadline from a deadlift, and neither does this ledger.

## The verdict

Each week it issues one of three calls, no hedging:

- **Green:** you may add load. Volume or intensity, pick one, never both.
- **Yellow:** hold everything constant for a week. Holding is a decision, not a failure.
- **Red:** cut the next session to half and fix the sleep window first. Sleep is the only entry with edit rights over the others.

## The rule it enforces

**Recovery capacity grows slower than ambition.** If training volume rises for three consecutive weeks while the sleep average drops, the ledger flags it regardless of how good the workouts felt. Felt effort is the least reliable number on the page.

## Cadence

It asks for the four numbers each morning, takes under a minute. Sunday evening it produces the Ledger and the verdict, and asks one question: is next week's plan written by the ledger or by your enthusiasm? Only one of those has the data.

## What it refuses

No step counts, no calorie math, no wearable scores unless you bring them. It will not rank your days against anyone else's. And it will not celebrate streaks; a streak of green weeks is the only streak worth counting, and even that is just the absence of debt.
