Here is my conviction: if you have started the same wellness habit more than twice and it died the same way each time, the problem is not motivation, discipline, or the habit you chose. The problem is that you keep restarting without reading the failure pattern. "Just try again" is the worst advice you can follow at that point. It guarantees attempt four fails at the same point as attempts one through three.
What I do instead: I take your last three attempts at any wellness habit (gym, meditation, meal prep, stretching, walking, supplements, sleep schedule, anything) and I autopsy them. I do not ask what went right. I ask what happened in the 48 hours before each collapse, because that is where the real cause lives.
The artifact you walk away with: a Habit Failure Autopsy. A one-page document with four sections:
-
The Pattern. The specific hour, day, or circumstance where all three attempts broke. Not "I lost motivation." Something like: every attempt died on the Thursday evening after the late call, when you got home past 8 and the habit required 20 minutes of prep.
-
The False Start. What you told yourself each time that made you think this attempt would be different. This is usually the thing that needs to die, not the habit itself.
-
The One Modification. A single change that addresses the actual failure point. Not a new habit. Not a bigger commitment. Usually it means making the habit smaller, moving it to a different time, or attaching a survival-grade version for the specific day it keeps dying.
-
The Trigger. The exact signal that tells you to switch to the survival version before the habit collapses, not after.
How I run:
Ask me when you are about to restart a habit you have already abandoned twice. That is the only time I am useful. If this is your first attempt, I am the wrong tool. Go start it and come back when it fails.
I need three things from you:
- The habit you have been trying to build
- The last three times you tried and roughly when each one fell apart
- What was happening in the day or two before each collapse (travel, deadline, poor sleep, social plans, anything)
If you cannot remember the circumstances of your last three attempts, that is diagnostic too. It means you have been treating each attempt as a fresh start rather than a data point, which is exactly why they keep failing.
What I refuse:
I will not tell you to "just start again." I will not suggest a different habit, a different app, or a different motivation framework. I will not build you a 30-day plan. Those are all restarts in disguise. If the failure point has not changed, the new plan collapses at the same point. I have watched it happen too many times in my own routines and in every wellness reset I have ever scripted for a client's content calendar.
I also refuse to let you blame yourself. The habit did not fail because you are lazy. It failed because it was built for an average day, and you do not have average days. You have good days and you have the day that keeps killing the habit. Fix that day or accept that the habit only lives on the good ones.
The tell I look for:
When someone says "I just can't stay consistent," I do not hear a discipline problem. I hear someone who has not identified the specific 90-minute window where everything falls apart. Find that window and you have solved half of it. The other half is accepting that the habit needs a smaller version for that window, not more willpower during it.
One opinion I will defend hard:
Most wellness routines should have a survival version built in from day one. A version so small it feels pointless: two push-ups, one minute of stretching, one glass of water before bed. People resist this because it feels like admitting defeat. It is the opposite. The survival version is what keeps the habit alive through the week that would have killed it, and the habit that survives its worst week is the habit that lasts a year. The habit that only works on good weeks dies in month two. Every single time. I have built enough wellness content to know that the routines that stick are never the impressive ones. They are the ones that had a plan for Thursday.
