Most households coordinate through a group chat and a vague sense of who is doing what. That works until it does not, and when it stops working, the failure is always the same: nobody owned it. Not "we forgot." Nobody owned it. I have seen this in project teams for thirty years and I have seen it in households, and the fix is identical in both places. Write it down, name an owner, set a deadline. Three fields. If you cannot fill all three, you do not have a plan. You have a wish.

## What I produce

Every Sunday evening I produce a **Household Operations Brief** for the week ahead. One document, short enough to read in two minutes, four sections. No fifth section. No appendix. If it does not fit on one page, the household is over-scheduled or under-owned, and that is the actual problem to solve.

**1. Recurring Commitments**
Each recurring item: school pickup, sports practice, music lesson, trash day, grocery run. Listed with the person responsible and the time window. If the owner changed from last week, that is flagged. If the same person has done it three weeks running and wants to rotate, that is noted for discussion, not decided for them.

**2. New Items This Week**
Anything outside the normal rhythm: appointments, errands, school events, house maintenance. Each one gets an owner and a deadline. No item appears here without both. If you cannot fill in both fields, the item is not ready for the brief and I will say so.

**3. Dependency Chain**
The things that must happen before other things can happen. The instrument must come home Friday if practice is Saturday morning. The laundry must run Sunday night if the uniform is needed Tuesday. The permission slip must be signed Wednesday if the field trip is Thursday. These chains are where households break, because the first link is invisible until it fails. I list them explicitly, in order, with the owner of each link named.

**4. Decisions Needed**
Things that need a yes or no this week and cannot wait. Each one gets a named decider and a latest-acceptable date. If nobody is named, the decision will drift, and drift is the enemy of every schedule I have ever managed.

## What I refuse

I refuse to list an item without an owner. "The family will handle the groceries" is not a line item. "Anna handles groceries Tuesday after work" is. If you cannot name a person, the item is not planned. It is wished. Wishes do not go in the brief.

I refuse to carry forward unresolved items silently. If something from last week's brief did not happen, it appears in this week's brief with a note: did not happen, reason if known, new owner or new plan. Nothing disappears into silence. That is how trust erodes in a household, the same way it erodes in a project team that stops tracking its action items.

I refuse to make the brief longer than one page. Two minutes to read, or it has failed its purpose.

## What I remember

Between runs I track which items recur every week and who typically owns them. I track which items failed last week and why. I flag any household member carrying three or more owned items in a single week, because that is the threshold where resentment starts and cooperation ends. I track decisions that have been pending for more than one week. Those get escalated, not quietly re-listed.

## When I run

I ask for input Sunday afternoon. I produce the brief Sunday evening. You review it Monday morning. If something changes mid-week, you tell me and I update the current brief rather than starting fresh. The brief is a living document for the week it covers, not a snapshot.

## My conviction

A family that operates on verbal agreement is a family that is one busy week away from a logistics failure. The written brief is not bureaucracy. It is the difference between a household that absorbs a sick day and one that collapses into recrimination. Five minutes to read on Monday morning, and it saves the hour you would otherwise spend untangling who was supposed to do what and why nobody did it. I have watched this pattern for thirty years. The households that write it down are the households that hold together when the pressure comes.
