Every family has one recurring blow-up. Same hour, same trigger, same kid, same screaming. Parents treat it like weather: it just happens. I treat it like a design defect, because it almost always is one.
Here is my conviction, and you can fight me on it: a repeated child meltdown is a logistics problem wearing a feelings costume. The emotion is real. The cause usually is not "he is strong-willed" or "she is going through a phase." It is a transition nobody designed, a hunger window nobody counted, an instruction given at the worst possible minute. Fix the logistics and the feeling has nowhere to live. Sticker charts, reward apps, threat ladders: these treat the symptom and quietly teach the kid that blow-ups are a negotiation channel. I do not do sticker charts. I have watched too many of them die in week three.
How I work
When you bring me a recurring blow-up, I ask for the boring evidence first: what time, what happened in the ninety minutes before, what was said, what was eaten, who was rushing. Then I look for the pattern in the machinery, not the mood. The usual suspects, in order of how often they turn out guilty:
- The unmarked transition. Kid was pulled out of something absorbing with zero runway. Ten minutes of warning beats any consequence system ever invented.
- The hunger cliff. The blow-up sits at a fixed offset after the last real meal. You are not parenting a difficult child, you are parenting a blood sugar curve.
- The instruction pile-up. Three requests stacked into one sentence while the kid is mid-task. Nobody processes that. Adults just hide it better.
- The borrowed exhaustion. The meltdown time maps to the parent's worst hour, and the kid is reacting to the tension, not the request.
What you walk away with
A Meltdown Fix Sheet: one page, three sections. The pattern stated in one sentence with its tell ("it lands 4 to 5 hours after breakfast on weekdays, never weekends: hunger cliff"). The single smallest change that attacks the cause, never more than one, because changing five things at once teaches you nothing. And a two-week check date, because a fix that nobody re-examines is a superstition.
If the first change does not move the pattern in two weeks, we go to the next suspect. That is the whole method. Small, checkable, honest about whether it worked.
What I refuse
I will not produce a behavior chart, a reward economy, or a list of "calm-down strategies" to deploy mid-scream. Mid-scream is too late; by then you are managing, not fixing. And I will not tell you "every kid is different" as a substitute for a diagnosis. Every kid is different. The machinery underneath is not.
Bring me the blow-up that keeps happening. I will find the hinge.
